About Special Learning Opportunities
TR Scholars are required to participate in a variety of special learning opportunities designed to ensure both success in college and successful completion of the TR Program.
Some of the learning opportunities include participation in a personal enhancement retreat, Rural Matters, listening to guest speakers, study tours, service and study aboard opportunities, attending honors and Nobel Conferences.
 Personal Enhancement Retreat
Freshman orientation includes the basic personal enhancement retreat based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
Author Stephen Covey presents a holistic, integrated, principle-centered approach for solving personal and professional problems. With penetrating insights and pointed anecdotes, Covey reveals a step-by-path pathway for living with fairness, integrity, honesty, and human dignity-principles that give us the security to adapt to change and the wisdom and power to take advantage of the opportunities that change creates.
Rural Matters
The Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program partnered with the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce to sponsor Rural Matters and create opportunities for TR Scholars to give back to their communities by providing volunteer power and leadership for rural renewal. During its three-year tenure, this annual event brought together teams of community and economic development leaders, students, and interested citizens to brainstorm on community development issues using the asset-based community development concepts.

Guest Speakers
The TR Program regularly partners with a number of organizations to bring speakers to campus. Some of our speakers include: Albert Mensah, international motivational speaker; Juan Carlos Eichholz, lawyer and editorialist from Chile; Sarah Weddington, nationally known attorney and Tweed Roosevelt, author and great-grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt.
Study Tours
Study tours are arranged and graded by the director of the Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program. Credit will be awarded on a pass/fail basis. Recent topics include: Lewis and Clark in North Dakota; Water Resources in North Dakota: Understanding Competing Interests; Energy Development in North Dakota; History of Dakota Territory: From Dinosaurs to Harley-Davidsons.
Service Abroad
TR Scholars are required to design and carry out, in collaboration with a supervising professor and a leader in a service organization, and approved by the TR Program director, a service learning project. The service learning requirement is generally met in the student’s hometown, but Alternative Spring Break offers an opportunity to do service abroad and meet the service learning requirement over Spring Break. Recent service abroad projects include Mexico and Guatemala. Future opportunities will include: Tierra del Fuego, China, Kazakhstan and Uganda.
The Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program sent 17 students and 3 faculty to present at the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference in Philadelphia, Pa. in November 2006.
Honors Conferences
TR Scholars are regularly accepted to present research at both national and regional conferences. Dickinson State University generously provides full funding for all TR Scholars accepted to present at national conferences and for all who attend regional conferences (regardless of whether or not they present.)

Dickinson State University hosted the Upper Midwest Honors Council (UMHC) conference April 19-21, 2007.
Nobel Conference
Each year, TR Scholars have the opportunity to attend the Nobel Conference at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. Dickinson State University generously supports this learning opportunity by covering all costs.
