2007 All-DAC AWARDS
2007 DAC Standings
Dickinson State can feel a sense of relief--uncustomary for this proud program--but at this point, the Blue Hawks will take it. In a 3-7 season, winning two out of their last three games doesn't sound half bad.
DSU was able to gain a measure of revenge over Dakota State today at Whitney Stadium before a home crowd under brisk conditions. The Trojans upended the Hawks earlier this year in a non-conference battle in Madison, So. Dak., 14-12. But today was for keeps and the Blue Hawks didn’t let the opportunity escape.
James Macey made sure of it. The junior college transfer piled-up 182 yards in 40 carries (4.6 yd average) and he, behind a determined front, kept DSU’s offense on the field helping them to accumulate 17 first downs to the Trojans’ six. Moreover, Dakota State’s offense could produce only one field goal though their defense returned a fumble (Brenton Hunter) 57 yards for a TD and a 10-6 lead early in the fourth quarter.
At that point, Macey and the Blue Hawks responded well. Derek Pauley hauled in a 26 yard spiral from the arm of Matt Gittings for a 12-10 lead, and on their next possession, DSU put he game out of reach. Clint Grosz accepted the honors with another TD toss from Gittings, this time from 11 yards out. Both score came after the Trojans were forced to punt. The Blue Hawks went 48 yards in five plays the first time and then followed that with a 44 yard drive in seven plays to ice the game.
The two TD’s were the only two that Gittings completed on the day, though 88 yards gained rushing in 11 attempts greatly boosted DSU’s balance and gave the Trojans much more--too much as it turned out--to concern themselves with than Macey’s crippling, chains-moving gains.
Grosz, who is a Mott-Regent product led DSU with three total grabs and 35 yards. The Blue Hawks were only able to eke-out 61 total yards on the day through the air, but churned out a whopping 330 yards in 64 attempts on the ground.
Among the DSU seniors playing their last game was Shawn O’Brien. In the first half, O’Brien booted a 41-yard field goal to tie Dickinson State’s all-time record and then he kicked the 34th field goal of his Blue Hawk career, a 25-yarder that helped DSU to a 6-3 lead at intermission.
Defensively, Lico Sifuentes bowed out of his Blue Hawk career with eight more tackles and Karter Kleeman (Killdeer, No. Dak.) added another four take-downs. Ryley McPeters was credited with the Hawks’ only interception on the day, returning it 11 yards and he also added five tackles.
Jamestown College Drops Hawks to Seventh Loss of Season, 34-14

Jamestown College handed Dickinson State another bitter pill at Rollie Greeno Field in Jamestown, No. Dak. this afternoon, 34-14. The Blue Hawks netted 338 yards of offense on the day and nearly 200 of that was through the air, but their inability to put the ball in the end zone, especially after spotting the Jimmies an early lead, led to their downfall.
Before the end of the first quarter, the Jimmies led 20-0. That quick lead came courtesy of a DSU screen play, in which Jamestown linebacker Nick Schuetz raced 35 yards after intercepting Caleb Midura's pass. It was the team's seventh interception return touchdown of the season.
Dickinson State is now 2-7 on the season and 2-4 in the DAC. Their season closes next week at home against Dakota State, a team that was responsible for the Hawks’ third loss of the year in a non-conference tilt, 14-12, in Madison, So. Dak.
DSU’s James Macey is one shining example to give the Blue Hawks hope. He led the Blue Hawks attack by rushing for 87 yards in 23 tries. Macey has been consistent, reliable and he has blossomed into a solid back around which an offense can be formed. He could not however find pay-dirt. Neither could Punk Humphrey, though in only five carries, he tallied more than seven yards per effort in gaining 39 yards. As a team, the Blue Hawks were good for 142 net yards on the ground.
Quarterback Matt Gittings stepped-up nicely with 11 completions for 168 yards and one TD--a 49-yard connection to Max Pearson. It was Pearson’s only reception on the afternoon but he also had a 46 yard punt return. Clint Grosz was the team leader in receptions with six, and he managed to help the Hawks’ efforts considerably with his 77 net yards as a wideout.
The Hawks converted on only three of 18 (17%) third-down attempts but that in part forced nine Humphrey punts and also a fourth-down conversion success of four of six (67%).
Defensively, the Blue Hawks kept the NAIA #13 ranked Jimmies from dominating the game. In double-digits tackles were Mike Keyser (12), Lico Sifuentes (11) and Ryley McPeters (10), leading the way for DSU to keep Jamestown College to 4.9 yards per carry versus their own average of 4.4.

Phil Leck jumps the out route and then scampers 45 yards for a TD late in the third quarter

Dickinson State defeated Mayville State 31-7 this afternoon at Whitney Stadium and upped their record to 2-3 in the DAC and 2-6 overall. The Blue Hawks ended their three game slide in convincing fashion, but it was a third-quarter interception by Phil Leck that pried open the Hawks' struggle with the Comets and began the momentum that DSU has needed.
In the first 30 minutes, Dickinson State leapt out to a 13-0 lead, but Mayville's scoring pass from Dustin Hagens to Andy Jacobson cut the Hawks' lead to 13-7 just before intermission. DSU shut down the Comets the rest of the way and MSU was equally stubborn--until the end of the third quarter. Leck read the play beautifully, hung back until the timing was right, brought the aerial into his chest and then carried the pigskin 45 yards past the home bench and didn't stop running until he crossed the goal line.
In the fourth quarter, the Blue Hawks added 11 more points on a four-yard TD run by James Macey. A two-point conversion attempt was successful on a short pass from Caleb Midura to Punk Humphrey. Sean O'Brien's 25 yard field goal closed out the scoring.
Midura finished the day eight of 15 attempts for 160 yards and two TD's. The offense, largely under his guidance, totaled 341 yards and picked up 20 first downs. James Macey earned 88 yards on 20 carries helping the Hawks to 150 yards on the ground. Humphrey was also effective and though he only carried the ball six times he punched throught the Comet defense for 42 yards. Clint Grosz led the Blue Hawks in receiving with five receptions and 92 yards.
Lico Sifuentes (10 tackles) and Luke Steiner (9) led the defense, keeping the crafty Hagens on the run and limiting the Comets to 202 yards.
