Head Coach
Ty Orton
Ty Orton is entering his first season as Head Coach of Men’s Basketball at Dickinson State University. Orton has a wealth of collegiate coaching experience and has set goals to "bring the Blue Hawks basketball team to the level of excellence that is present in other programs at DSU."
Orton comes from McCook Community College (MCC) in McCook, Neb. He was the head coach there for five seasons, compiling a 71-83 overall record and his team placed second in the NCCAC with a 14-17 record in 2006-07. Previously, Orton spent four seasons as an assistant coach for men’s and women’s basketball at Otero Junior College (La Junta, Colo.).
At MCC, Orton established himself as a defensive-minded leader who also recruited high quality student athletes. He feels confident that he can also attract the same type of successful individuals to DSU. In his MCC tenure, Orton had a 98 percent graduation rate of his players, 30 earned Academic All-NCCAC honors, 12 were named Academic All-American and four received Distinguished Academic All-American. His teams earned top-10 National Academic Honors four times and his 2004-05 team placed second nationally.
Orton’s skills from the sideline have been acknowledged as well. In 2004-05, he was named Coach of the Year for the NCCAC, East Sub-Region and Region IX.
As a collegian, Orton played at Eastern Wyoming Junior College (Torrington, Wyo.), and after earning his associate of arts degree in 1996, he played for Rocky Mountain College (Billings, Mont.). He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1998 in education and his master’s degree in exercise physiology in 2003 from Adams State College (Alamosa, Colo.) while simultaneously working as an assistant coach.
Orton is originally from Torrington, Wyo. His wife, Michelle, also has a basketball coaching background. She was the head coach of women’s basketball at MCC.
Tim Daniel
Assistant Coach
Tim Daniel is the assistant coach for the men’s basketball team. He was the head coach of the DSU men’s basketball team for 11 seasons. Two of his team’s advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. His 2000 squad finished the season in the “Elite Eight” at the national tournament and the 2001 team made a “Sweet Sixteen” appearance. He was 151-153 as head basketball coach at Dickinson State.
Daniel is an assistant professor of health and physical education, the head coach of both men's and women's golf teams and an assistant coach for track and field.
Daniel earned his bachelor’s degree from DSU and his master’s degree from Central State University in Edmonds, Okla. He served as a graduate assistant at Central State before moving to Northwest Community College in Powell, Wyo., as an assistant basketball coach. After two seasons at Northwest, Daniel returned to his alma mater.
Daniel and his wife Kelly resides in Dickinson with their three children, Sami, Allison, and Jake.
Devin Gonzales
Assistant Coach
Devin Gonzales is entering his first season as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball. He is no stranger to the DAC, playing for two years at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D. from 2003-05. Before transferring to Black Hills State, Gonzales attended Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colo., playing for Rattler head coach Tim Moser and earning Academic All-American/All-Conference and Honorable Mention All Region IX Honors for the 2002-03 season. Originally from Boulder, Colo., Gonzales attended Fairview High School, where he played basketball and football. He played one season of semi-pro basketball in Phoenix, Ariz., before getting into the coaching profession.
A 2005 graduate of BHSU, Gonzales earned his undergraduate degree majoring in business administration with an emphasis in management and an athletic coaching minor. Before arriving in Dickinson, Gonzales spent one year as a graduate assistant at BH. He is currently working on his master’s degree in education.
Gonzales is the son of Steve Gonzales, of Washington, D.C. and Valerie White, of Boulder, Colo.
Andre Goldberg
Assistant Coach
Andre Goldberg is entering his first season as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball. After playing point guard for Ty Orton at McCook Community College, Goldberg went on to play at Black Hills State University where he received a sociology degree with a minor in athletic coaching.
While at McCook Community College, Goldberg earned all conference honors and finished in the top five all-time in assists. During his time at MCC and BHSU, Andre earned Academic All-Conference and Academic All-American honors.
Goldberg is the son of Karen Goldberg and Larry Porter who both reside in Boulder, Colo.
