Softball Coaches Head Coach—Guy Fridley The 2006 season marked a first for Dickinson State Softball as the Blue Hawks claimed the first regular season and conference titles in school history. The team finished 2nd at the NAIA Region III Tournament for the second straight season. The 2006 team set a school record with 43 wins and ended the year with an overall record of 43-7 (.860). For his efforts, Fridley was named the 2006 NAIA Region III and DAC Coach of the Year. The Hawks have seen a steady climb in the rankings since Fridley took over the reigns as head coach. In 2005, he led the Blue Hawks to a 27-15 (.642) record. His team finished 3rd in the DAC regular season, 2nd in the DAC tournament, and advanced to the NAIA Region III tournament where they finished 2nd. In his first season, Fridley led the Hawks to their winningest season in school history, finishing with an overall record of 13-18 (.420). His record of 106-62 (.630) over a four-year span is the best in DSU softball history. He is currently the DAC conference coaches’ chair for softball. During Fridley’s tenure, he has coached 23 players that were named to the All-Conference Team, 14 to the NAIA All-Region Team, three DAC MVP’s, two NAIA Region III MVP’s, one Region III Tournament MVP and four NAIA All-Americans. He has also coached 27 players that have been honored as DAC Scholar Athletes, and five that have been named NAIA All-American Scholar Athletes. Fridley has put a major emphasis on recruiting. He believes building a tradition of excellence here at DSU starts with getting great recruits. A Watford City, North Dakota native, Fridley started his college career at Williston State College where he received an A.A. and A.S. After graduating from WSC, Fridley attended Dickinson State University and graduated in the fall of 2001 with a baccalaureate degree in Composite Social Science and Physical Education. Fridley earned his Master’s in Sports Management from Nova Southeastern University. While attending Williston State College, Fridley participated in basketball and baseball. During his sophomore basketball season he was named to the Mon-Dak All-Conference Team. While at Dickinson State University, Fridley participated in basketball for two seasons. During Fridley’s senior season, he helped lead the Blue Hawk’s to their first trip to the NAIA National Tournament since 1968. He was named All-NDCAC his senior season after averaging 15 points, three assists, and 2.5 steals per game. During the 1999-00 season Fridley guided the Blue Hawks to the Elite Eight of the NAIA National Tournament. Fridley is DSU’s second all-time leader in three-point field goals made (108), seventh all-time in career three-point percentage (.391), and sixth all-time in steals (99). Along with his softball coaching duties, Fridley is also the Head Women’s basketball coach and is an instructor in the Physical Education Department. Fridley and his wife Amber reside in Dickinson with their two year old daughter, Amy. Guy Fridley is entering his 6th season as the Blue Hawk head softball coach. In 2007, Coach Fridley piloted DSU to an overall record of 32-8 en route to the NAIA National Tournament in which they won three of their first four games and reached the “Elite Eight”. Their sensational national appearance came on the heels of a Region III Tournament Championship and a 15-1 DAC season. Many of his players picked-up post-season recognition, including Dana Dunsmore (1st Team), Mehgan Shaw and Danielle Abrahamson who earned All-American honors. Coach Fridley was named the DAC Coach-of-the-Year for the second season in a row and he was also named the 2006-07 NDAPSSA Female Coach-of-the-Year. The Blue Hawks were similarly recognized as the 2006-07 NDAPSSA Female Team-of-the-Year.
